My Perfect Evening*

Sunday evening Dino went up north to visit his parents for a few days–it’s quite a long distance…five hours in the car. I was swamped with work and had my niece’s Christening so I stayed here at home. As you know by now, we’ve been spending a LOT of time together…a LOT. Since he’s been unemployed he’s home with me all day. This is a good thing for a lot of reasons–we didn’t use to eat dinner together til sometimes 9 o clock at night. We NEVER got to eat breakfast together since he always had to leave to commute an hour. And now I’ve got a built-in assistant when I’m working on assembly of 350 invitations like I’ve been all week!

Having said that, I do find it really valuable to have some alone time once in a while. We have our separate hobbies and different groups of friends, but we’ve both been quite cooped for the duration of this horrific winter. So when he said he wanted to go away for a few days, I bid him farewell with a sigh of relief.

Now, this may lead you to believe that I had a lot of tricks up my sleeve as soon as the door slammed behind him. It’s actually a lot less interesting than that. Mostly, I worked and worked and worked–that 350 piece invitation job is just one of about 18 weddings that I’ve got to get shipped out this month. I didn’t even really go out, other than the post office. I ate cereal twice a day. I left dishes in the sink. I slept on his side of the bed. (He might argue that I do all of these things when he’s around!) I didn’t fall into the toilet with the seat up when I got up in the middle night.

Last night, I indulged myself a bit, with red wine, crusty Italian bread and a homemade pasta dish that I just “whipped up”. (It was actually so good…just sauteed shallots, garlic, pancetta and fresh spinach, deglazed with a bit of white wine over linguini!) I watched American Idol over a second glass of wine, I worked a bit on production, and by 10 pm I was snug in my bed with my fat cat by my side.

This, my friends, is my idea of a perfect evening.

*Disclaimer: I find it pertinent to note that though I enjoyed my alone time, this is not to say that I would not, and do not, enjoy doing all of the above mentioned activities WITH Dino as well. Just so ya know.

  1. Hmmm . . . I wonder if 11:30 am is too early for wine and shallots. This post made me hungry!
