Christmas Wreath-Making at New Pond Farm
Something really strange is going on with me that I can’t quite explain. It started with the festive tree decorating in my living room. Then Dino caught me singing Christmas carols in the shower. And I mean singing with gusto–not just humming under my breath. And now, wreath-making! It’s almost as if a jolly elf has taken over my body and put a song in my heart! I think I know how the Grinch felt when he realized that Christmas “ came with out ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags!” Now let’s just hope that a nasty bout of swine flu doesn’t come and kill my buzz! (By the way, I put myself on the list at my doctor for the shot.)

Anyway, wreath-making. That was super fun! My neighbor Pam invited me to join her group that goes every year. The event took place in Redding, CT at the beautiful New Pond Farm, just down the way from our house–I didn’t even know it was there! The barn was incredible. We pulled in at night time and the whole place was lit up. It’s a really great space. About 30 women were there, each gathering our own pine boughs from a huge pile out back. They provided all sorts of embellishments like dried flowers, bittersweet berries, ribbon, boxwood greens and even spray paint to give it all a bit of sparkle. It’s fun to see everyone’s personality come out in their wreath–some were very traditional, some really glitzy…mine was simple, and natural with a bit of a twist on typical Christmas colors. I used a spruce base, with a lime-y green boxwood over that, and then a pop of purple in dried amaranth. I finished it with a rustic raffia bow.
Afterwards, I sat down and talked turkey with this fella.
What are you doing to prepare for the holiday season this year? Decorating? Cooking? Baking? Hibernating under a rock like the “old me” around Christmas?
